The Song of Umbrella Summer

Verse 1
Annie loved her bicycle.
She rode it wild and free.
Down hills and over bumples
And she sometimes skinned a knee.
Racing with Rebecca,
Around obstacles she’d go!
She never had a worry,
Was fast and never slow.

Verse 2
But something changed our Annie.
What made her courage flee?
Some Band-Aids covered both arms.
And a bandage wrapped her knee.
She worried about bug bites,
She thought about disease.
She even thought pneumonia
Might come from every sneeze!

Chorus:
When it’s raining, you use an umbrella
To keep you from getting wet.
But have you stopped to notice
If the sun is shining yet?
If you hold open your umbrella,
You may never feel the rain.
But, keep an eye out for the sunshine
That will break through again.
How can I help a friend who’s sad?
What will take the pain away?
Listen and laugh,
Remember the past,
And the fun that you’ve had along the way.

Verse 3
Speed began to scare her,
And worries filled her heart.
It wasn’t just the big things
Like wrecks or fires that start.
She worried about the small things
Like what her friends would say,
And even hugs from some adults
That took her breath away.

Verse 4
It started when Annie’s brother,
Jared was his name,
Had a little accident
In a simple soccer game.
It was just a little accident
That took his life away.
And why it changed her family so,
Was more than she could say.

Chorus:
When it’s raining, you use an umbrella
To keep you from getting wet.
But have you stopped to notice
If the sun is shining yet?
If you hold open your umbrella,
You may never feel the rain.
But, keep an eye out for the sunshine
That will break through again.
How can I help a friend who’s sad?
What will take the pain away?
Listen and laugh,
Remember the past,
And the fun that you’ve had along the way.
