Chapter 7--Logic Puzzle

Class Science Projects

Objective:  ...use comprehension strategies,

including locating details and vocabulary to solve logic problems
     The class chose projects for the third grade science fair.  They had already learned a lot about science fairs during the second grade when their projects were very different.   Seven kids won ribbons.  The boys that won were Tony Alessi, Chad Dawes, Brian Lewis, Josh Buckner, and Dougie Hanks.  Emily Venable and Kamiko Osaka were the girls that won.
     One of the kids showed the importance of sunlight in bean growth.   One tested dish- washing soap to see which worked best.  One grew different types of non-green plants called molds.  One kept rainfall records for five months.  One tried to prove that static electricity could be useful.  One showed that she could train an earthworm. One graphed the way several kinds of airplanes flew.  Use the judges’ notes and your reading and logic skills to help them figure out these questions:

    1.  What project did each kid do?
    2.  Which place did they win?

 List the winners and their projects in the order they won.

Judges’ Notes:

1.   Third-place winner, Josh, did not experiment with bubbles like Tony did.
2.    The girl who won 7th place did not grow molds like the first-place girl did.

3.   Sixth place went to Brian Lewis’s experiment with growing green plants.

4.   Dougie’s 2nd-place experiment made the judges’ hair stand on end and stick to a balloon.

5.   Chad’s project came in one place ahead of Brian’s project.

6.   Unlike Chad, Tony did not use paper for his project which came in just behind Josh’s.

7.   Third place went to the person who made a weather graph.

8.    Neither Josh nor Kamiko would work with earthworms.
